PETITION: Tell Thai Union to Stand Up For Human Rights and Our Oceans
"Thai Union Group: As the largest canned tuna company in the world, you have a responsibility to lead the change to truly sustainable fishing methods, and full transparency and traceability of our seafood from ship to plate. As informed citizens and consumers, we expect you to clean up your supply chain and help ensure our oceans, and the people whose livelihoods depend on them, have a fair and sustainable future."
Thai Union, the largest canned tuna company in the world, has been connected to labor abuse and destructive fishing, but is currently considering changes to its operations that would change the seafood industry forever. Thousands of people have demanded better products on store shelves, and the company is listening.
Momentum is growing as retailers, pet food companies, and tuna brands around the globe commit to sell more responsibly-caught products. As the world’s largest supplier of canned tuna, it is up to Thai Union to continue this movement in the right direction -- for workers, marine life, and the ocean.
We have the power to push Thai Union to act immediately.
If we had to sum up tuna’s plight in one word it would be greed.
Tuna is a bit like the oil of the fishing industry. It means big money and there’s huge global demand for it, but it’s under pressure and some stocks face collapse. All of which makes big global fishing companies increasingly desperate to get their hands on what’s left.
This has led to some genuinely shocking behaviour out at sea and some profound changes in our oceans.
Below we’ve summarised the key issues, from overfishing to the use of slave labour. Beware, some of it is not easy reading.
